Dear Reader,
Once upon a time, I was just like you, juggling two remote jobs and coming the closest I had ever been to financial freedom.
For a while, I was riding high, enjoying the benefits of two incomes, and reaping the rewards of my work.
I worked hard, performed my tasks diligently as they came, and my employers were none the wiser.
Meanwhile, I never worried about a layoff, because I always had a second job as a backup.
I still remember the chill that ran down my spine when my boss called me into a virtual Teams meeting with HR unexpectedly.
He started the call by letting me know he found out about my second job and that I was being terminated, effective immediately.
I had no idea how he'd done it. I'd perfectly covered my tracks:
There were zero red-flags that should have tipped them off.
I tried to deny it, and pretend there must have been some mistake
Shockingly, he was able to show me my paystubs from my other job
It turned out he had seen my employment information through a secret number that ties all your employment information together, called a TWN (The Work Number®).
There was no denying it: He discovered that I was working another job.
My secret was out, and before I knew it, I went from being double-employed to jobless.
In a sense, I kind of deserved this. I had actually heard about the TWN before, but always brushed it off as being too much of a hassle to do something about.
What that means is that once you freeze it, employers can't track you and see if you're secretly working other jobs.
The only problem is that the company that manages your TWN makes it hard to do it:
❌ You can call them, and they'll put you on hold for hours
❌ You can email them, and they won't respond at all, if ever
❌ You can even try mail them, but it's a costly hassle to go through printing, signing and postage
I realized when I was fired that this difficulty in freezing your TWN is intentional
They want freezing your TWN to be a hard process that takes a long time, so that you never get around to actually doing it
You see, they know that you're a busy professional whose time is valuable
And they also know that the longer something takes for you to do, the less likely you are to feel like it's worth doing.
I realized I fell for their trick by giving up when hitting their obstacles, and was determined to never let this happen again.
I decided to freeze my TWN to protect my privacy and my future employment arrangements.
But that's when I hit another hurdle:
I was met with the convoluted and time-consuming procedures. This company seemed to go out of its way to make freezing my TWN a Herculean task.
That's when I realized - I wasn't alone. There were likely countless individuals out there, just like me, who were working multiple jobs and needed to keep their employment data private
And just like me, they were probably struggling to navigate the complicated process of freezing their TWN.
So, I decided to do something about it: I decided to create FreezeTWN.
FreezeTWN is designed to make the TWN freezing process as simple and straightforward as possible.
